A ceramic coating makes your car easier to keep clean, but "easier" isn't "never." How you wash it decides whether it still beads like new in year three or looks tired by year one. Here's exactly how we tell our Frisco clients to care for theirs.
The first week
A fresh coating needs time to cure. For the first week or so, keep it dry when you can and don't wash it. If a bird dropping or bug lands on it, gently lift it off with a damp microfiber. We'll give you the exact cure time for your coating when you pick up your car.
How to wash a coated car
- Rinse first. A good rinse (or a foam pre-wash) lifts most of the dirt before anything touches the paint.
- Use a pH-neutral shampoo. Harsh, high-alkaline soaps wear coatings down faster.
- Two buckets and a clean mitt. One bucket with soap, one to rinse the mitt, so you're not dragging grit back across the paint.
- Top to bottom, wheels last, with separate tools for wheels.
- Dry gently with a plush microfiber drying towel or a blower. North Texas water is hard, and letting it air-dry in the sun leaves mineral spots.
Every 1–2 weeks is the right rhythm for most Texas drivers, and sooner after bugs, bird droppings or pollen.
What to avoid
- Automatic brush washes. The brushes put swirl marks in the coating. Touchless is better in a pinch, but their strong soaps wear coatings faster.
- Washing in direct sun or on hot panels.
- Dish soap, degreasers and polishing compounds. They strip or abrade the coating.
- Letting contaminants bake on. Bugs and droppings etch faster in Texas heat, coating or not.
Toppers: keep the slickness
Over months, the top layer of any coating gets loaded with road film and minerals, and the beading slows down. A ceramic topper (a light spray-on layer) brings back the slickness and adds a little sacrificial protection. Every few months is a good schedule for a daily driver.
Signs your coating needs attention
- Water sheets slowly or sits flat instead of beading.
- The paint feels rough when you run a clean hand over it in a plastic bag.
- Water spots that won't wipe off.
Most of the time a decontamination wash and a topper bring it right back. Etched spots may need a light polish.

FAQ
Can I take a coated car through a car wash?
Avoid brush washes; they cause swirls. A touchless wash is OK occasionally, but a proper hand wash is best for the coating.
Do I need to wax a ceramic coated car?
No. Wax sits on top and can actually hide the coating's water behavior. Use a ceramic topper instead.
How long does a ceramic coating last?
It depends on the coating and how it's maintained. Our coatings range from 1 to 5 years; regular washes and toppers help it reach its full life. See our coating cost guide for the options.
