Wax, sealant, ceramic coating, PPF... the options for protecting your paint can feel overwhelming. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what each does, how long it lasts and which one is right for how you drive in North Texas.
Quick comparison
| Wax / Sealant | Ceramic Coating | PPF | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Natural or synthetic layer sitting on paint | Liquid coating that chemically bonds and hardens | Thick, clear, self-healing urethane film |
| Typical lifespan | Weeks to a few months | ~1–5+ years | ~7–10 years |
| Rock chips | No protection | Minimal | Excellent |
| UV & chemicals | Low | High | High |
| Gloss | Warm glow, short-lived | Deep, glassy, long-lasting | High gloss (or matte with stealth film) |
| Ease of washing | Slightly better | Dramatically easier | Easier, best with coating on top |
| Relative cost | $ | $$ | $$$ |
Wax and sealants: short-term shine
Carnauba wax gives a beautiful warm glow, and synthetic sealants last a bit longer. The problem in Texas is heat. Wax can break down quickly in summer temperatures, and neither offers much defense against bird droppings, bug acids or hard water. They're a good choice if you enjoy waxing your car every few weeks, but they aren't long-term protection.
Ceramic coating: long-term gloss and easy care
A professional ceramic coating bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, slick layer. It won't wash off, it resists UV and chemical etching, and its hydrophobic surface means dirt and water slide off. That makes washing dramatically faster, and the car looks freshly detailed far longer.
What it won't do: stop rock chips or deep scratches. Coatings are measured in microns, which isn't enough to absorb an impact from a rock at 70 mph.
PPF: the physical shield
Paint protection film is a thick, clear urethane layer that absorbs impacts. It's the only real defense against rock chips, which are common on the Tollway, SH-121, US-380 and around all the North Texas construction. Premium films self-heal light scratches with heat and can be removed cleanly from factory paint.
PPF is a bigger investment, so most drivers cover just the high-impact areas: bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors.
The best answer for most people: combine them
The most popular protection package we install is:
- Paint correction to perfect the finish
- Full front PPF on bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors
- Ceramic coating over the entire car, film included
You get chip protection where it matters, and gloss, UV resistance and easy washing everywhere else.
Quick recommendations: Lease or tight budget? A sealant or entry coating. Keeping the car 3+ years? Ceramic coating. New, luxury or highway-commuter car? Front PPF plus coating. Exotic? Full-body PPF plus coating.
FAQ
Can you put ceramic coating on top of PPF?
Yes. Film-specific coatings add gloss, hydrophobics and stain resistance to PPF, and they're one of the best upgrades you can make.
Do I still need to wax a ceramic-coated car?
No. Traditional wax can actually mask the coating's properties. Use coating-compatible maintenance sprays or toppers instead.
Which lasts longer, PPF or ceramic coating?
Both are long-term products. Premium PPF is commonly warrantied for up to around 10 years, and professional coatings are typically rated from 1 to 5+ years depending on the product.
